Is nickel-alloyed gold (white gold) ferromagnetic?
I've been googling for a while now, and I cannot find any authoratative sources which state whether or not a nickel-alloyed gold can be attracted by a magnet. It's common chemistry that pure Nickel is ferromagnetic, and that nickel has been alloyed with gold to creat white gold. But are these alloys ferromagnetic?
When you attempt to sell a ring to a jeweler, s/he often uses a magnet first... isn't this test useless on white gold?
I haven't been able to get a definitive answer and I don't think I will manage it before the deadline. But the following may be helpful.
The site and related site show that Gold Manganese alloys can exhibit ferro-magnetism. Consequently it is not unreasonable to suggest that a gold-nickel alloy could be ferromagnetic.
BUT.
Jewellers are not stupid. If the magnet test doesn't work then they wouldn't use it. Using a test that doesn't work is commercial suicide. So we know that white gold is feebly magnetic at best. So my best advice is that for all practical purposes, white gold cannot be magnetic.
However, it may have a little bit of magnetism.
