Andrew Hill Passing Ships Jazz Music CD Review
Passing Ships is the latest release from Jazz Superstar Andrew Hill, and I can only think of one word to describe this CD… AWESOME!
It's a rare day indeed that I get a CD from an artist that I can truthfully say does not have a bad track in the bunch. I'm more than happy to announce that’s exactly what I must say about this one. There simply is NOT a bad one in the bunch. No fillers here at all, with each song standing tall on it's own.
Passing Ships is a pleasantly varied, mix of 7 tracks that are very well written songs by this clearly superb artist. Most of the songs display a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Seemingly drawing from what I can only imagine are him own personal experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions like love, heartbreak, pain, failed relationships and unattainable romance. They’re all here.
I give Passing Ships my highest recommendation. It just plain belongs in any serious music collectors collection regardless of genre preference.
While the entire album is really very good the truly standout tunes are track 2 - Passing Ships, track 5 - The Brown Queen, and track 7 - Yesterday’s Tomorrow.
My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 - Sideways. Good stuff!

alto flute?
so i have played the flute for 6 years, and im wanting to learn the alto flute. I wanted to know if anyone knew any tips that will make it easier to learn? Also does anyone have a ballpark figure of how much it would cost monthly to rent one?
First, know that the alto flute sounds in G. Second, you will really need to hone your breath control to play extensive phrases, because it requires a greater volume of air than the regular transverse flute, and wastes at least as much. Finally, it is obviously a longer and heavier instrument than the C flute and will make your right arm tired quickly. I assume most composers account for this, providing plenty of rest time in their pieces for G flute as they do for bass flute.
All these horrible things said, I've recorded with alto flute a few times, and it has a beautiful BROAD tone, which is immediately distinguishable from the C transverse flute. I can't speak to the price, because I always borrow my friend's alto flute, but look at the Yamaha website for some idea - they mass produce one. Then go to EBay and get a good deal.
Good Luck!
Oh yeah, I suggested EBay, because it is highly unlikely that you will be able to rent one; There is no demand.
